What you need to know about distress beacons

Information from Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

No matter whether you’re travelling by land, sea or air, a GPS equipped distress beacon can mean all the difference in a life-threatening situation. Beacon registration can be completed online for free.

Search and rescue in Australia

The Australian SAR system is built upon strong collaborative relationships and formal arrangements to provide an effective SAR service to any person(s) in distress no matter where they are in the Australian Search and Rescue Region (SRR).

The Australian SRR covers an area of nearly 53 million square kilometres, which is one tenth of the world’s surface.

This vast amount of space borders the search and rescue regions of 10 other countries.
